Women Chemists Committee

 Promoting Women in Science
The California Section WCC (Women Chemists Committee) was founded in 1989 by a core group of dedicated and enthusiastic women chemists still active on the WCC Executive Committee today. Our mission has been "to be leaders in attracting, developing, and promoting women in the chemical sciences." Many of our WCC members have helped establish, or promote, successful, educational, and public outreach programs such as Project Seed, Expanding Your Horizons, Chemistry Olympiad, and National Chemistry Week.

In fact, our local WCC has evolved into one of the most active Women Chemists Committees in the nation, and has been considered a role model for other local sections. We believe in promoting active cooperation and networking with other local professional women in science from organizations with similar objectives. In the past, we have collaborated with other organizations such as AWIS (Association for Women in Science), ISP (Iota Sigma Pi, a National Honor Society for Women in Chemistry), and WAGE (We Advocate Gender Equity). Our local section gratefully acknowledges contributions from these organizations towards co-sponsoring the WCC reception at the 1997 Spring National ACS Meeting and the Barriers to Careers Workshop in October of 1998 at Mills College. Our local section WCC is currently co-sponsoring, with Iota Sigma Pi and the University of California at Berkeley, a workshop on “Negotiating for Your Life:  New Success Strategies for Women” on March 27 from 10a.m. to noon at the Hotel Nikko as part of the National ACS Meeting in San Francisco.

Through quarterly meetings, the California Section WCC provides technical programs with poster sessions, workshops, and panel discussions. Programs are geared towards career assistance, educational and public outreach, and recreational/social meetings combined with technical interests each summer. Typically our attendees include students from high school through graduate school, post-docs, teachers and professors as well as research scientists and other working professionals from industry, academia, government, or self-employed chemists. It's a great group for networking and meeting people with both common and diverse interests!
